The Blog: What’s happening on the farm?

Lambs, lambs, lambs…….

Well last month we were waiting for the lambs, now they are here…….its been busy to say the least! We have also had to contend with the Beast from the East bringing minus temperatures here but no snow thankfully. Lambing has been tough, but most of our our sheep are canny and hide behind the

Busy waiting……

Well, the sheep should be in full swing of lambing time but they are making a slow start, hence the blog!! We have only had a few lambs which have been moved off the antenatal fields, up the hills onto the post natal fields where there is the shelter of the walls, gorse, trees and

The deer.

Whilst going around the sheep this morning I spotted this little deer sitting contentedly by the side of the wall and fence in the sunshine and out of the wind until she spotted me……..she jumped up and set off, knowing exactly where she was going on her farm, straight up the field, and the photo

Soon be lambing time…………sheep snacker is out and about.

Our sheep have all been scanned to see if they are carrying lambs, and if so how many. This allows us to separate them into the ones expecting single lambs, twins, or triplets (and the one expecting quads!) Then we can feed them all accordingly. The singles don’t want too much extra feed as they

New girls to the herd.

These are the heifers which will be continue to grow up here to replace some of the older cows. They have been bred here at Ross Farm from our herd of cows and their father is the good looking Hereford bull (ginger with the white face), who likes posing for the camera. They should grow

Snowdrops are coming………

Our January has been cold but we have missed the snow so, no snow days or sledging for us! The snowdrops are just coming out and making us believe Spring is nearly here at Ross Bay. We will be starting lambing mid February so lets hope for a dry time so the lambs get a

The new toy!

Lots happening down on the farm here at Ross Bay.  We have purchased a spread a bale, from Carrs Billington, which helps us bed the cattle up more efficiently, spreading the straw well and improving our efficient use of the straw, thus improving our carbon footprint on the farm – not looking forward to my

Best newcomer to young cattle handling.

We had a trip to Carlisle Auction one evening for Stephen and Philippa to take part in the Young handler competition.  They both did very well, they borrowed pedigree limousin cattle to show.  They had to discuss showmanship with one judge and they display their handling skills in the ring.  Stephen was in the intermediate

Ervie Laura.

We had a recent visit to a pedigree Hereford cattle sale in Stranraer, and purchased a lovely new pedigree cow called Ervie Laura.  She seems to be settling in well here at Ross Fram, and enjoying some of the Kirkcudbright cold weather!  You will have to keep your eyes peeled to see if you can

Dinner time!

Well it seems to be that time of year again, Winter time.  The clocks have gone back an hour so it gets dark earlier.  Most of the cows are loose housed in the sheds for winter time, enjoying their silage, and sheltering from some of the wind and rain.  It feels a little like Spring
