STORE AND OTM CATTLE

Wallets Marts conducted their special August Anniversary Show and Sale of 893 Store cattle on Monday 14th August 2017. It is now 161 years since Wallets formed their auction business in Castle Douglas and a decision was taken last year to mark the event with an annual show and sale. This event has proved extremely successful drawing increased entries and witnessing buyers from as far afield as Cheshire to Aberdeen. Credit must go to all consignors, both old and new, for the quality of cattle on display.

This years event was ably judged by Mr W Purdon, Straven House, Carluke who found his champion is a Limousin cross bullock consigned by first time exhibitors P & M Gray, Eastfield, Symington. Scaling 522kgs it sold for £1330. Reserve Champion was also a Limousin bullock from the same home which scaled 482kgs and grossed £1245. First prize single heifer was a Charolais cross from DJ & SD Dale Sunley, Ross Farm. Weighing 348kgs it grossed £1005. Best pen of four bullocks was awarded to a pen of Limousin crosses from AJ Sharp, Barscarrow which weighed 506kgs and made £1215. Champion pen of 4 heifers were Limousin crosses from M S Taylor & Son, Edingham which made £930.

Outwith the show cattle bullocks topped at £1395 for a pair of Simmental bullocks from Messrs T Robb, Trolane whilst heifers topped at £1310 for British Blues from the same home. Bullocks topped at 258.3ppkg for Limousins from Eastfield, Symongton with heifers selling to 288.3ppkg for Charolais crosses from Ross Farm, Borgue. Overall averages levelled at 222.46p or £1001.08 for 657 bullocks (217.95p or £968.21 last year) whilst 236 heifers averaged 212.38p or £906.69 (209.6p or £841.19 last year).

Also forward were 26 OTM cattle which saw cast cows topping at 144p per kg for a Simmental from Blackhills, Corsock and £966 for an Aberdeen Angus from Moss-side, Dalbeattie. 5 Cast bulls sold to 128p per kg for a South Devon from Meikle Cloak and to £1331.76 for an Aberdeen Angus from Garrarie. Cast cows averaged 114.96p per kg whilst cast bulls averaged 118.5p
